Moje Menhardt’s paintings of the Danube are part of her autobiography, a landscape she has been connected with since her childhood. Some of the works were created in Weittenegg, near Melk. the exhibition is also a tribute to the Danube; it is a transport route, a historical icon, geopolitically relevant and a source of inspiration.
“The Danube flows broadly and calmly. Without time. The water is murky, it was fed by glaciers, meadows and swamps. Sunlight can only penetrate by one or two spans. The water then glows bright yellow-green. If a cloud passes in front of the sun, the glow goes out. A green, dull greenish grey remains. An endless variety of small waves glitter on the Danube in the sun. And at the same time the blue of the sunny day is reflected. The glitter is constantly changing, gusts of wind sweep across the surface of the water and wipe the glitter according to their whim” ©W.M
