Cristina Coza-Damian’s main medium is sheer painting and she uses photography as her central artistic pretence. Her work’s starting point is the dissemination of a world encapsulated in an iconic image. Postcards images, deeply imprinted in the collective memory, became the subjective reinterpretation of already existing places and stories that can and must be recounted. Postcards are archetypal images for the collective identity, but they also are the figurative pretext for the development of the painting technique. The high investment in color and brushstrokes are in the end concealed under the horizontal lines drawn on the fresh paint. The regeneration of a past image comes with a background noise that clearly distorts the painted image. The current theme of her work is the relationship with a past that is not her own, but with which Cristina Coza-Damian can identify due to the socio-cultural environment to which she belongs.
