Atena Elena Simionescu

Atena Elena Simionescu  was born in 1958 in Filipești, jud. Bacău, Romania. In 1985 she graduated  The “Ion Andreescu” Institute of Fine Arts, Cluj-Napoca with a BA in graphics. Between 2002 and 2006, Simionescu studied and graduted Doctoral Studies at The Faculty of Philosophy, “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iași and continued with a second PhD (2010-2016), at The Faculty of Visual Arts and Design, University of Arts “George Enescu” from Iași, studying visual and decorative arts. She has participated in numerous international exhibitions and received many prizes (such as The Leonardo da Vinci Order at EuroInvent, 2013, Iași). The artist is also a University Professor at The University of Arts “George Enescu”, Faculty of Visual Arts and Design Department of Graphics and the rector of the same university.

Her aesthetically pleasing colored engravings explore the concept of memory through collaged botanical elements and feminine silhouettes, emphasizing the expressiveness of hands.
